Mindfulness comes from an ancient Buddhist tradition that has received lots of attention in the mainstream these days. It is about awareness and even-mindedness, and has been taught in clinical, secular settings and been proved to be useful as a preventative mental health care.
It was Jon Kabat-Zinn, MIT-trained scientist who was the first to start teaching and popularizing mindfulness since 1970s through introducing Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. Here’s his definition of mindfulness:
“Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; On purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally.”
